A custom WordPress redesign for a Corvallis-based conservation nonprofit restoring native species and habitats across the American West.

From offices in Corvallis, Oregon, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Institute for Applied Ecology (IAE) restores habitats in partnership with agencies, organizations, and the private sector. Their first staff, in Corvallis in 1999, was one full-time employee and three seasonal botanists, and the Santa Fe office followed in 2015. Now a team of ecologists, educators, and other professionals, they carry out conservation research and bring ecological education to students and teachers. Through their Sagebrush in Prisons Project, incarcerated men and women grow sagebrush from seed to restore habitat for the greater sage-grouse. IAE also manages the Native Seed Network, which has worked with land managers, seed producers, and restoration professionals since 2002, and hosts the National Native Seed Conference.

We laid out the Institute for Applied Ecology’s new WordPress website to follow their work in restoration, research, and education, with a menu for each, so a teacher looking for a curriculum or a land manager looking for native seed can go right to it. We opened most pages with a large photograph from the field, where so much of IAE’s valuable work happens. For the Native Seed Network, we built a resource library and a directory of seed partnerships across the US that people can browse by region, and we set up a community forum where anyone working with native seed can ask questions and share ideas.
We know the Institute for Applied Ecology’s website well, because we built it and host it, and the IAE team can count on us for ongoing help. Besides monitoring the site constantly and saving a backup each month, we keep WordPress and the plugins behind their online store and events calendar up to date, so both keep working for the supporters and volunteers who use them.

Josh and Abide developed and launched our new website with skill and attention. We are very pleased with the design and functionality of the new site, which is also faster and easier to update and maintain than our previous online presence. The project was economical for our nonprofit, too. And when we need ongoing assistance the team is there to help us. We feel our website is now in good hands. Thanks, Abide!
