Nature Neighbors

A custom WordPress website and logo for a wildlife habitat certification program helping Benton County, Oregon, residents create habitat in their own backyards.

01 — The Client

Backyard habitats, connected to a larger landscape.

nature-neighbors.org

Benton Soil and Water Conservation District and Greenbelt Land Trust lead Nature Neighbors together, and anyone who owns, rents, or manages outdoor space in Benton County, Oregon, can create a certified wildlife habitat through the program. Certification is built around five habitat-building actions, such as adding native plants and conserving water. Each person who enrolls becomes a habitat steward, and a program technician visits their site to help them plan their project. They can work at their own pace and ask for extra help, including financial aid. A final visit confirms the work, and they receive a metal certification sign for their yard. Nature Neighbors believes that even a small native habitat can make a big difference for wildlife, and that the more people who restore native habitats, the more they can connect habitats that have become fragmented.

02 — The Solution

What we built together.

01

Website Design

As Nature Neighbors was getting started, we designed their website to introduce the program to Benton County and show people how to take part, and we developed its WordPress theme too. The home page begins that introduction with a short video of a bumblebee, a bird at a birdbath, and a butterfly on a coneflower, then turns to the five actions behind certification. Program staff have put together an extensive collection of articles, links, and downloadable guides in the Resource Library. We built the library so visitors can search it or filter it by the action they’re working on, putting sound advice close at hand for anyone making room for wildlife.

02

Website Hosting & Maintenance

Hosting is part of our work for Nature Neighbors too, and the program’s coordinator and the staff at both partner organizations can call on us for a hand with their website. Through 24/7 monitoring, monthly backups, and timely updates to WordPress and each of its plugins, we keep it safe for those who enroll there and the donors who support the program.

03

Logo Design & Branding

Our goal for the Nature Neighbors logo was to make it warm and approachable for the everyday residents the program serves. Inside the outline of a house, the mark shows a bird and a butterfly among wildflowers, a picture of the habitat every Nature Neighbor is working toward. Across the website, each of the five habitat-building actions is marked with a color of its own, like green for native plants and purple for wildlife, which helps visitors recognize each action from page to page.
