Polar STEAM
A custom WordPress website for an Oregon State University STEAM education program that connects educators, artists, and writers with polar scientists.
Polar STEAM got its start at Oregon State University in 2022, bringing together two long-standing programs, the Polar Educators program and the Antarctic Artists and Writers program. The STEAM in their name stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Each year, their team pairs a new cohort of educators, artists, and writers with scientists who research the polar regions, and together they work online or in the field, in places such as Alaska, Greenland, and the Antarctic region. The educators include middle and high school teachers, community college faculty, and others who teach outside the classroom. Polar STEAM makes these remote places accessible, so the educators, artists, and writers can, in turn, share the polar regions with the wider public through their teaching, art, and writing.
Website Design
Since 2022, we have designed, built, and kept adding to Polar STEAM’s WordPress website, where the creative lessons and stories from each year’s fellows can reach classrooms and readers far from the poles. In the Resource Hub, teachers can find lesson plans for the subjects and grade levels they teach. Each lesson names the educator and researcher fellows who developed it together, with links to their profiles, so teachers can look into the project it came from and whatever else those fellows have shared.
Website Hosting & Maintenance
Polar STEAM’s website sits on a server we manage and has 24/7 monitoring. Each month’s backup includes the lessons and blog posts their fellows have contributed. A few times a year far more people than usual come to the site, and by then we’ve readied it for them.
Logo Design & Branding
Our logo for Polar STEAM is a blue snowflake with three circles set between its six arms, next to their name and the words “Education. Art. Science.” The snowflake also works by itself at a small size, as the icon in a browser tab and on their YouTube channel, so Polar STEAM is still easy to spot where there is no room for the name.
