New York Agriculture Map
A custom interactive agricultural map of New York State, built for New York Agriculture in the Classroom.
The Empire Agriculture Map is an interactive educational tool built for New York Agriculture in the Classroom, displaying New York State’s agricultural diversity through a county-by-county, commodity-by-commodity interactive map. Using data from the 2022 NASS Census, the map lets educators and students explore 27 agricultural commodities (from apples and beef cattle to timber and maple) across all 62 New York counties and 10 geographic regions. Each region includes detailed educational content about the area’s geography, soil, climate, and agricultural history. The map is used in classrooms across New York State to teach students about the breadth and diversity of agriculture in their home state.
Website Design
We designed and built the Empire Agriculture Map as a custom WordPress web application featuring a fully interactive SVG map of New York State. The map supports commodity-based filtering (toggle individual commodities on and off), map type switching (regions vs. topographical), county-by-county exploration, and regional deep-dives with detailed educational content about geography, soils, climate, and agricultural history. This is not a typical brochure site — it’s a specialized interactive tool built from scratch with custom JavaScript, SVG rendering, and WordPress as the content backend. The design is optimized for classroom use: clear iconography, intuitive controls, and responsive layout for both desktop and tablet. Social sharing and email functionality let educators share the map with colleagues.
Website Hosting & Maintenance
We host nyagmap.org on managed WordPress infrastructure tuned for an interactive web application with custom JavaScript and SVG rendering. The hosting plan includes performance optimization, daily backups, security hardening, 24/7 monitoring, and direct support.

04 — Praise From the Client
Over many staff meetings and discussions at NY Agriculture in the Classroom, we had conceptually outlined and designed an educational agriculture map and were looking for a designer to bring our ideas to life. Abide was referred to us from one of our partner organizations for work they did on a similar project. After going through multiple bids, we chose Abide and we are so glad we did.
Although we are across the country from their headquarters, there were no problems communicating, meeting, and implementing our project. Josh and David were wonderful to work with. Although we are not web designers, they did an amazing jobs communicating the programming process/language and providing education on how the systems work once developed.
The final product is phenomenal and we look forward to sharing the interactive resource with students and educators from across the state and to work with Abide on future phases of the resource.
